Bill Bright was the founder and leader of Cru, formerly known as Campus Crusade for Christ. He loved the Word of God, and interestingly, memorized it in the Living Bible. Dr. Bright was an evangelism machine, sharing the gospel with everyone he met, and leading many of them to Christ. I once heard that the following very cool verses were his favorites:
So everywhere we go we talk about Christ to all who will listen, warning them and teaching them as well as we know how. We want to be able to present each one to God, perfect because of what Christ has done for each of them. Colossians 1:28,29 (The Living Bible)
Isn’t that good? Anyway, a precious memory in my life was the day that Dr. Bright prayed for me. Memory is foggy, but it was probably summer of ’86 and Campus Crusade was having a conference at the University of Illinois. I was working University Food Service and sneaking off to the conference in between shifts. At one session, Dr. Bright spoke (I think on the above verses, but can’t be sure), and I waited in line afterward with the other minions to talk to him. When I told him of my desire to be more faithful in sharing the gospel, he offered to pray for me, and I eagerly accepted.
That’s all. It was cool. He was a real hero of mine, as he was to many, many others. And I like to think that, to some small degree, God has answered the prayer he prayed that day.
Now, there is one more thing: Steve Green, a popular Christian singer of the day was also at the conference to provide music, of course (“People need the Lord” was his big hit at the time, but he had others). I waited in line to talk to him too, not for me, but for this girl I was crushing on at the time who loved a particular song of his.
I finally got in front of him. I must have had something for him to write on, and I said, “Hi Steve, say, could you write out an autograph to my friend Laura, and say something about her favorite song of yours, ‘To live is Christ.'”
Steve Green looked at me, perhaps somewhat tired from a long day, and after a pause, said, “Steve Fry sings that song.”
“Oh…well, maybe you could write something else then?”
For tomorrow, Tuesday, August 11th: Colossians 2
