Real Men Sing Real Loud

I’ve been worshiping with a bunch of men in the last couple of days, and as the jingle goes, I’m lovin’ it.

In fact, I always do.  I’m here at the Desiring God Pastor’s Conference in Minneapolis, and there are, oh, I don’t know, about 1,500 of us here.  I’ve been coming to this conference for the last 10 years, more or less, and the Spirit of God always fills my sails through the anointed preaching and worship.  There is something deliriously wonderfully about singing with a torrent of men’s voices all around. In fact, I sit up front specifically so that the sound of the worshiping throngs of godly guys envelops me.

Pure joy.

I’m not against worshiping in a mixed crowd with men and women, mind you; I do it every weekend.  But there is something uniquely special about belting out a song with men alone.

I sense the same thing when I’m in a mixed crowd of worshipers, and the song or chorus calls for only women to sing. I shut up and the sound of joyous femininity fills the air. Listening to a throng of women sounds like a chorus of angels has descended from heaven.

It’s interesting when you think about it – I suppose by pure design, without training, half of any multitude is poor to mediocre in the singing department, yet nevertheless, put it altogether in worship of our great God and King, and you get musical delight.

What is it that makes men singing alone, or women singing alone, so wonderful?  Obviously, I’m indulging in speculation here, but I’m guessing that it has to do with the unique quality of each sex.

Men are different than women no matter how much our culture tries to throw us altogether and make us the same; these efforts won’t work in the end.  Men have their role to play and women have their role to play, and though they are absolutely equal in the sight of God, He plans something different for each sex.

So maybe singing in a crowd is like mixing colors. In one corner is a beautiful red, and in another corner is a bright and vibrant green.  But mix them together, and you get…brown, not quite as spectacular.

So that’s my random musings on prayer (“He who sings, prays twice”) for the day, combined with a thought or two about a changing world.

Anyway, wish you were here…you men, I mean.

No offense ladies.
